Holding Space


Instructions

2. Use the journal prompts to explore and expand what this lesson means for you personally. Don't feel pressure to answer every single question; put pen to paper and see where it takes you.

3. Close with the 10-minute meditation or meditate silently on your own.


Ways to hold space

  1. Let others use their own wisdom.

  2. Provide just a small amount of help or information, don't overwhelm them.

  3. Don't make decisions for them; don't take their power.

  4. Don't get your ego into it.

  5. Let them feel safe enough to fail or not figure it out in the moment.

  6. Allow them to make different decisions than you would

 

QUESTIONS

  • Based on the 6 "ways to hold space" above, how do you feel you are able to currently hold space for others? Was there a specific way that stood out to you as difficult?

  • Try to remember a time someone held space for you. Who was this person in your life? How did they make you feel? Describe the ways in which they let you be open or vulnerable.

  • Describe a part of your life where there doesn't feel like any space is held for you. Where do you feel the most judged or critiqued? With whom do you feel very guarded and judged?

  • In your immediate or extended family, try to think of one person who does their best to hold space and another that does the opposite. What is your relationship like with them?

  • In your job or workplace, try to think of one person who does their best to hold space and another that does the opposite. What is your relationship like with them?
